“Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.” —-> Psalm 37:4

I shared this with a friend of mine. I made the mistake of not explaining it to him too well I guess because he came back to me getting the whole meaning of it wrong. So I explained what I got out of it to him and now I feel that I should write it out somewhere. This verse is too important to get it confused.

I better understand things when I write them out, so what better place to do that then Tumblr with all of you? (:

Let me break this down.

“Take delight in the Lord”, to me it means we all need to find our joy and worth in God. We shouldn’t look for it in material things, boyfriends/girlfriends, friends, or even family. In the end, they will all fail us in some way or another. We need to put our trust, strength, life, joy, our delight, in God. Some people, like my friend, look at this and will say oh yeah, so if I just like God and say hey every once and awhile then I’m going to get everything my heart asks for. Uh, sorry, but no.

Let’s break down the second part of this verse.

“he will give you the desires of your heart.” I desire a chai tea frappuccino, a new car, and a free ride to college. So I like God and our relationship is okay, I read the bible and go to church so I should get things I want right? No. That is basically what my friend and some people will get from this verse though. When we give our life to God and accept him as our Lord and Savior, the desires of our heart should be very different then before.

I’m going to do my best to put all together now.

To take true delight in the Lord, we should be able to forsake anything that is keeping us from a life God has crafted for us. Get rid of that meaningless relationship, stop putting all your attention in your job, quit wasting your energy and words in pointless drama, refrain from seeking self glory. We need to put all our energy, time, and focus in God.

All worth, happiness, fullness, friendship, trust, hope, love, courage, strength, and pure delight can and will be found in the Lord. We need to become fully reliable on God. We are never going to be able to do anything by ourselves. When we can give everything to God, we will take true delight in the Lord.

When we have found true delight in God, the desires of our heart shouldn’t be set on ourselves. Instead of asking God for a promotion or a better life, we need to let desires of our heart change to be pleasing to God. We should ask for ways that God wants us to shine at our work place, to let relationships grow, to show us what HE wants us to do in our life.

The desires of our heart should be the desires of His.

“Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

I’m not at all saying that I’ve got this down, far from it. But trying is better than not trying at all right?

Give me some feedback on this, your thoughts, and what you get from this verse.
